Another polling day gone, but no result. As I write, the Coalition has 71 seats and Labor 70. Not too many were celebrating last night, except some individual MPs. Some, I noted, were incredibly ordinary. It was as though people wanted to be represented by the primary school teacher they had in 1975. In fact, some of them probably did. It's said that we get the government we deserve. Is the fact that we don't yet have a government our just desserts for being unwilling to choose? As a voting population, we failed to either back the incumbent government or bring in a new one. Do we also deserve the pandering to the holders of the balance of power which will now occur? Sadly the answer is probably 'yes'.
Tucked away amongst the election news was an item about stolen Apple laptops being traced because of online registration. Apparently those caught with them said they bought them 'from a bloke in a pub'. At less than half their normal price. There is a term for this and it is 'receiving stolen goods'. I hope everyone who's ever bought something in such dodgy, shonky circumstances at least suffers from having their ill gotten item taken from them by the police for return to that innocent party called 'the owner'. Preferably these purchasers of items in pubs (or do they go to the car park to make the transaction?) would be charged with receiving stolen goods. Of course that is much too harsh, impinging on that good old fashioned right to buy shonky things from 'blokes in pubs'.
